KEITH'S GRAND SLAM!

The 2002 bear season began with a personal goal. That personal goal was to harvest 3 Pope & Young bears with my bow.

The first began in nearby Quebec on a self guided hunt in a zec. Baiting began in May as soon as the snow melted. It all came together on my second evening on stand. A 385 pound 19 inch boar was taken. He had a bite taken out of his butt like an apple from another bear.

The second leg of my grand slam came in Maine on Tuesday, September 17. I sat on a used bait that one of my clients had shot on the first week. There was fresh sign of a good bear visiting the bait. It was my fifth night on stand in Maine in 2 weeks. At 6 :45 pm a shooter came in and I harvested him with a well placed shot. He green scored 181/2 inches and weighted 290 pounds dressed.

The final chance to fill my grand slam came the next night in New Brunswick. My guide and I sat perched in a big yellow birch with my guide filming over my shoulder. We passed on two adolescent bears early. Then around 6 :30 Mr Big arrived. I looked to my right and there sat a bear that looked like an ATV. He sniffed the air and then walked in. I was at full draw for about 3 minutes or more and couldn’t hold it much longer. He finally gave me a broadside shot and I muffed the shot. He was all of 500 pounds and a potential booner. I was sick. The next night I climbed in the stand and arrowed a nice boar that green scores 181/4 inches. I was happy with him and very proud to have accomplished my own personal bear grand slam in one year. Two of the bears I will mount as lifesize bears to go on display in my show room of my taxidermy shop. The other into a rug. They will remind me of the hard work and long days of dedication to bear hunting that it requires to accomplish such a goal.

I have hunted bears for 13 years with bow and arrow and the addiction has gotten stronger. Anyone who knows me or spends any time with me knows how much I love black bears.
